ST. PAUL — State Representative Jeff Backer, R-Browns Valley, issued the following statement on the latest budget surplus estimate from Minnesota Management and Budget showing a potential $2.4 billion surplus.
“Minnesota Democrats already blew through a record-setting $17.5 billion budget surplus last year when they increased spending by 40% and raised taxes by nearly $10 billion,” said Backer. “Despite last year’s surplus, Democrats failed to deliver the tax relief that Minnesotans deserve and refused to follow through on campaign promises like eliminating the income tax on social security.
“This year, tax relief should be the only option on the table. It is time to stop the out-of-control spending that is driving inflation and making life more difficult for families and small businesses. I plan to support permanent, lasting tax relief, like an income tax reduction and sales tax reduction, that will put more money back into your family budget and pocketbook."
