SAINT PAUL – The 2024 legislative session came to a rocky and unprecedented finish in the Minnesota House of Representatives Sunday evening as House Democrats rolled dozens of unrelated bills into a massive 2,800 page omnibus bill, used procedural motions to shut down debate, and forced a vote just minutes before the midnight deadline.
State Representative Jeff Backer, R-Browns Valley, said that the end of session was unlike anything he’s ever seen during his time in the legislature:
“What we saw Sunday night was a complete and utter disregard to the rules and decorum in the Minnesota House of Representatives,” said Rep. Backer. “Democrats have proven once and for all that they are incapable of governing. Despite complete control of state government and two years to pass their agenda, Democrats mismanaged the clock and plunged the legislature into chaos leaving lawmakers to vote on a 2,800 page bill without giving lawmakers adequate time to review the legislation. Minnesotans are sick and tired of Democrats’ disrespectful and dysfunctional leadership in St. Paul and are ready to bring balance back to the halls of government.
