Update on Childcare Unionization Efforts

Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Dear Friends,

Earlier today, childcare providers soundly rejected a proposal to unionize—voting 1014 to 392 against the formation of a union. As you may recall, this election came as the result of controversial legislation passed in 2013 and signed into law by Governor Dayton aimed at unionizing childcare providers.

This result is great news for providers who no longer have to worry about being required to join a union and can now put this behind them and focus on providing outstanding care for the families they serve.

Last week, the newly formed Select Committee on Childcare Affordability held a meeting in Willmar. A number of providers and families attended the meeting to share their stories regarding childcare accessibility and affordability and to discuss ways we can work together towards solutions to address these problems.

For example, in Kandiyohi County alone, there has been a 22% decline in the number of childcare providers. As providers close their doors, prices have risen dramatically, creating an economic crisis in greater Minnesota.

I am working with local providers, county and state officials to find ways our community can assist in opening more daycare options.
