Dear Friends,
We’re back for the 2017 legislative session, and I’m excited to get back to work for the people of Kandiyohi County. It’s truly an honor to serve you, and I look forward to all of our conversations to come this year. If there’s ever anything I can do for you, please contact my office and I’ll get back to you.
Swearing-In
Tuesday marked the official start to this year’s session. I was sworn-in as a State Representative alongside my fellow members in the newly restored Capitol. Even though this is my second time taking the oath of office, the feeling of amazement and awe doesn’t lessen or go away. It’s humbling to serve in the House, and I can’t wait to work on your behalf.
Here’s a picture of me with Speaker Kurt Daudt, my aunt Linda, cousin Holly, and uncle Mike.
Getting To Work
Thursday was the first day we could introduce bills, and I was happy to see the House move quickly to help Minnesotans. We swiftly passed a bill to bring much-needed tax relief to 220,000 residents in our state. We wanted to deliver tax relief for Minnesotans, and we were able to do so on the first day of hearing bills. It’s a great start!
It wasn’t all good news on Thursday. House Democrats blocked an attempt to discuss a bill aimed at reducing health insurance premiums and introducing essential reforms to the struggling system. Democrats gave us their word they would vote to hear the bill, and they broke their promise to deliver premium relief for struggling families. We’ll see this bill in the near future, and I look forward to voting for its passage.
Staying in Touch
During my time in office, I've promised to represent our area fairly, and advocate for causes most important to you. I’m here to listen to you, and advocate on your behalf. With that in mind, it’s more important than ever for you to contact me and share your views. I can be reached by phone at 651-296-6206 or via email at rep.dave.baker@house.mn.
Stay warm this weekend and enjoy the new snow! Even with the bumps in legislation this week, we are very committed to getting issues resolved and help to those that need it the most.
I am committed to being that bridge-builder to help this process.
