Dear Friends,
We had a big week in St. Paul, so here’s a short update on our progress:
St. Paul Visit
I had a special visit this week from friends from Willmar and the surrounding area. Thank you, Pastor Keith, for giving an amazing opening prayer on the House Floor this past week. I was so proud to have these men join me for a quick tour of the Capitol.
Health Care Relief and Reform
Last night, the House passed the 2017 Health Care Emergency Aid and Access bill (Senate File 1) to give Minnesotans insurance premium relief and preserve access for those in need. The measure passed on a bipartisan vote of 73-54, and now we’ll start conference committee to iron out the differences between our bill and the Senate’s version.
We moved this bill quickly through the committee process because Minnesotans need immediate health insurance premium relief. The relief and reforms are important to help middle class families afford their insurance, and helps ensure continuity of care. We’ll continue to work on long-term reforms as we proceed through session. Our health care system is in need of saving, and there’s lots to do to help our residents, but this was a great start.
First Bill Moving
My first bill of the session, HF234, was heard in committee this week and passed on to its next stop. The legislation clarifies Minnesota statute, and cuts unnecessary red tape for rural electric companies and co-ops. This is a bipartisan initiative with nine other Republicans and six Democrats signing on as co-authors. Having support from both sides significantly increases the chances this bill can continue on its path and possibly become law.
Upcoming Events
I hope you’re enjoying the warm weather, but I hate to see our wonderful snow disappear. I love to snowmobile and hope our trails can make it through our warm spell. Here’s a couple events coming up.
Friday is the annual KCEO Gala at the Willmar Conference Center recognizing this amazing class of junior and senior students from NL-S, ACGC and Willmar Schools learning about being business owners.
Also, this weekend is the opening of Spicer's WinterFest. The Frozen 5k is Saturday morning at Zorbaz, there's Art and Wine events at Glacial Ridge Winery and the Annual WinterFest lighting ceremony and fireworks is at 7pm.
Next weekend is the popular Polar Plunge! I hope to see you out and about.
