Dear Friends,
It seems like winter is here! Lots of newscasts predicting half a foot of snow or more for our area tonight—we'll see if they're right. Please drive safely and give yourself extra time if you're out and about this evening.
Veterans Day
I had the opportunity to attend two Veteran's Day programs last Wednesday at schools in both Wells and Albert Lea, as well as join some local veterans for breakfast at the Albert Lea HyVee. What a privilege to be able to honor the many men and women who sacrificed much to serve our country. Thank you to all the schools that held Veteran's Day programs. I love watching kids take part in honoring our veterans, as this teaches our children much about the importance of those who serve and have served in our armed forces and what that means to our country. Thank you also to HyVee for providing a free breakfast for all of our veteran's and their spouses. What a great day to honor these heroes!
Congrats Albert Lea Tigers!
The Albert Lea Tribune recently reported on five Albert Lea student athletes who signed letters of intent to continue their sports careers in college! This is especially heartwarming for me to hear because some of them are my former first graders! I am proud of the hard work and perseverance these young men and women have put into both their sport and their academics to get them to where they are today. Way to go, Tigers!
I also wanted to wish best of luck to the Albert Lea Girls Swim team, participating in the State Championship today! No matter how today turns out, you've had an incredible season and our community is so proud!
School Visit
I had a blast visiting all seven of the early childhood classes at the Brookside Education Center in Albert Lea today having Colter show the kids how important it is to practice reading. I think they were all ready to adopt Colt as their class pet! It was so fun to see the kids light up when greeting Colter, and I appreciated the warm welcome from everyone at the school.
Broadband Grants
Today the Department of Employment and Economic Development announced 15 broadband grants which were part of funding passed during this year's special session. One of the grants is going to help broadband access in Freeborn. I wrote a letter of recommendation earlier this summer for their grant request, and am glad to see this project move forward. It's going connect 43 homes and one business and be a boost for agriculture, medical resources, and education.
