Dear Friends,
First, I’d like to thank everyone who joined me for my in-district meet-and-greets last weekend. I enjoyed speaking with all of you, and hearing your questions and concerns. As we approach the end of session, it’s more important than ever for you to share your opinion on issues we’re discussing in St. Paul. I’m always available to chat, and hope you’ll continue to contact me.
Omnibus Bills
It’s been one of our busiest weeks in St. Paul as we passed three omnibus bills with provisions ranging from child care, to broadband internet, to clean water infrastructure in southern Minnesota. I’m proud to support our initiatives, and want to pass along some of the highlights that will help our area.
Broadband Funding
Adequate broadband access is critical for competition in the state, national, and global markets. In Greater Minnesota, many areas face the problem of inadequate broadband internet access. We’re working to bring high-speed internet to unserved and underserved areas of our state. Our job growth bill contains $40 million for broadband grants and, when combined with federal funds, Minnesota will see over $100 million of broadband investment. This bill helps bridge the broadband gap between the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota, smartly utilizes innovative and emerging technologies, and respects the taxpayer’s pocketbook.
Agriculture Initiatives
Southern Minnesota is home to a rich tradition of farming and agriculture. Sometimes, this way of life is threatened due to the spread of livestock diseases or other emergencies. The bill we passed on Wednesday helps address this issue before it starts.
We appropriated funds to help track and predict animal diseases, and over $3 million to conduct preparedness and response activities related to these diseases and other agricultural emergencies. Instead of waiting around for the next disaster to hurt our farmers, we’re getting out in front of the problem to find solutions.
The bill also establishes a voluntary tractor rollover safety program for farmers. The funding is for grants to put roll-bars on older tractors if desired.
Though not in the omnibus bill, we recently passed a piece of legislation to clarify language regarding land buffers around waterways. Our clarification preserves water quality while ensuring farmers are fairly compensated.
Workforce Housing
In our area and around rural Minnesota, we have a shortage of suitable housing for our labor force. Lack of workforce housing has already been negatively impacting our local businesses’ ability to attract new employees. Because of the disparity, we included $500,000 of funding for workforce housing. If we have places for potential employees to live, we can attract more skilled workers to reside and work throughout Greater Minnesota.
Albert Lea Cleanup Day
Tomorrow is a great opportunity to do some spring cleaning at home. Albert Lea is hosting a Spring Hometown Pride Cleanup Day, where you can bring various household goods and yard waste to the Albert Lea Transfer Station and Demolition Landfill. Most items are free to dispose of, while some – like appliances and car tires – require a small fee. The event is from 9 a.m. until noon. Feel free to find more information here.
As always, please don't hesitate to contact me with your questions, comments, and concerns. You can reach my office by email at rep.peggy.bennett@house.mn or by phone at 651-296-8216.
Have a great weekend!
