News from Rep. Peggy Bennett 5-6-2016

Dear Neighbors,

This week, our country honored the efforts of our educators across the nation. As a retired teacher, I know how rewarding this profession can be, and I’m continually thankful for all of those who teach our young learners. Thank you, teachers, for all that you do!

Healthcare Exchange Reform

During my legislative meet-and-greets, emails or calls with constituents, or when neighbors stop to chat on the street, I routinely hear about Minnesota families’ concerns over rising healthcare costs. Last week, the Minnesota House passed our Health and Human Services bill with provisions aimed toward reducing some of these burdens.

Throughout my time in office, I’ve heard from area residents who have experienced a number of difficulties with our state healthcare exchange, MNsure. From poor service and long wait times, to increased costs and rising premiums, MNsure has caused hardship for thousands of frustrated Minnesotans. While there are many people who have benefited from this program, many more have fought the seemingly endless array of glitches, hiccups, and malfunctions that have led to, not only hardships, but sometimes dire consequences for citizens.

One of the most significant provisions in our HHS bill would transition Minnesota from MNsure to the federal exchange. Even after using $300 million to build and continually try to fix the website, our residents are facing higher premiums, decreased care options, and a system fraught with errors. Transitioning to the federal exchange allows those who’ve seen a benefit through MNsure to keep their coverage, but alleviates the headache of dealing with this failing system.

Colter at the Capitol

You likely remember my big, friendly dog, Colter. He’ll occasionally make trips to St. Paul with me, and the staff and legislators always enjoy when he’s around. This week, the folks at KIMT joined Speaker Kurt Daudt and me to spend some time with Colter. It’s always enjoyable to bring Colter along (except when he tried to steal a piece of candy off my table!). Feel free to watch the full story here.

Three Rivers Park District at the Capitol

We’ve had great weather in Minnesota, and we were able to enjoy it even more as Three Rivers Park District came to the Capitol this week. I got to hold a precious baby lamb, and see other baby farm animals. It was a fun to experience to get outside and enjoy time with our honored guests.

Farm Visit

Earlier today, I visited the Staloch farm in Hartland. Pat and Rosanna invited me to test out some of the new GPS technology, and I even had a chance to drive the planter. Thanks to Pat and Rosanna for the invitation, and thank you to all of our farmers who are working diligently this planting season!
