I enjoyed seeing many of you on Monday at the Albert Lea Memorial Day program. I look at Memorial Day as a yearly reminder that freedom is never free. There are so many who paid the ultimate sacrifice for us - we who benefit daily from the freedoms we have in this great country. I like the saying on the memorial at Graceland Cemetery (pictured here) in Albert Lea. The last two sentences are particularly impactful: “Their sacrifice was complete. Our responsibilities are never-ending.”
Local Projects Being Funded!
Earlier this week, Governor Dayton announced the signing of our capital investment bill featuring $825 million in general obligation bonds to fund important construction projects around the state.
Included in the legislation is funding for projects in our area. The first comes from a bill I authored to fund over $10 million for Riverland Community College. The funding would improve facilities and move auto service and diesel programs to Albert Lea from the Austin campus, allowing for better integration of those programs and use of educational equipment. Also included in the bill is $120 million for the Public Facilities Authority. Part of this funding would be used to finish the Stables area water and sewer project in Albert Lea. Lastly, there’s $300,000 for the Shell Rock River Watershed District to develop and implement a pilot storm water program to improve water quality in the area.
The final approval for these projects to receive funding is a big win for our area. We’ve been working hard to fund Riverland Community College and finish the Stables water and sewer project, and the signing of our bipartisan bonding bill will finally get these over the finish line. Our bonding bill reflects our commitment to improving infrastructure, school safety, and higher education.
Another significant part of the legislation is $25 million to make safety improvements to Minnesota schools. As a former teacher, I believe it’s more important than ever to look for ways to improve the safety of schools throughout the state. These funds will have a big impact in keeping our schools safer for students, teachers, and staff.
Foster Sibling Bill of Rights
As you know, my legislation – the Foster Sibling Bill of Rights – was signed into law recently. It was truly an honor to work on this bill and to help the young people who worked so hard to make this needed change. If you’re interested, here’s a story from MPR about how this bill idea started by writing on the back of a napkin and now will be law in our state. The bravery of Sasha Martin, Breanna Buckhalton, and Vivianna Castillo-Roybal to share their story is amazing, and I’m in awe of what they were able to accomplish.
