Greetings,
Conference Committees:
I hope you had a blessed Easter and a relaxing holiday weekend. The House is back in session and conference committees have been named. Conference Committees are made up of 5 State Representatives and 5 Senators. The committee’s job is to come to a compromise on the differing aspects of the House and Senate budget bills. After the conference committee finalizes the bill, it is then sent to the House and the Senate for a vote of each body before heading to the Governor’s desk for his consideration.
I have been appointed to serve on the conference committee for the Higher Education Omnibus Bill. I am honored to have been selected by the Speaker to serve on this conference committee. I am confident that the House Conferees, the Senate Conferees, and the Governor will be able to come to a compromise on the bill that benefits all affected parties and still be respectful of taxpayer dollars.
Transportation:
Governor Dayton said, while being interviewed on the radio earlier this week that he is likely to accept the Republican-sponsored transportation plan that invests $6 billion in road and bridge infrastructure over the next decade without raising any taxes. I am hopeful that he commits to this statement. In a time that the state is experiencing a $1.5 billion surplus, the Legislature and the Governor should prioritize using existing revenue versus raising taxes.
