Dear Neighbors,
The 2024 legislative session is officially underway, and it is an honor to return to St. Paul for the start of what’s sure to be another busy legislative session.
All of us have seen the consequences of one-party control that resulted in spending the state's entire $18 billion budget surplus, raising nearly $10 billion in new taxes, dozens of radical and divisive policies, and turned Minnesota's historic budget surplus into a projected deficit.
While we may have our work cut out for us this year I am nevertheless as committed as ever to standing firm on our shared values like personal responsibility, liberty, and efficient, limited government.
That work began in earnest on the first day of session, Monday, when House Republicans attempted to pass legislation that provides a fix to a problematic change in law last year impacting School Resource Officers (SROs). As you may recall, changes in law during the 2023 legislative session resulted in dozens of school districts around Minnesota to remove SROs from their schools.
This change has put the safety and security of students, staff, and school workers in jeopardy.
Unfortunately, Democrats continue to drag their feet on this and have delayed expedited passage of legislation that will fix this problem. Our schools and law enforcement deserve clarification on this, and we need to make sure SROs can return and continue to provide amazing work building relationships with students and keeping them safe.
Stay tuned on this important issue as I continue fighting for students!
