Dear Neighbors,
Hello! For those of you whom I have not had a chance to meet, my name is Brian Daniels and I am proud to be your new State Representative for District 24B. It is humbling and I am honored to represent you, your family, and your friends here in St. Paul. Our District offers its residents outstanding schools, wonderful small businesses, and a great way of life for all of us who have the privilege of living there.
The 2015 legislative session began last week with a ceremony that included all 134 members taking the oath of office. It was a tremendous honor to be joined by my wife, Elizabeth and sister, Rep. Marion O’Neill (R-Maple Lake). My sister and I are the first brother-sister pair to serve in the state legislature at the same time. I could not be more grateful to have my sister by my side as I begin this fantastic journey as your state representative.
Committees began their work this week. I am proud to have been appointed to four committees on which I will work hard to solve the problems facing our district and state. My committees include Aging and Long-Term Care Policy, Agriculture Finance, Higher Education Policy and Finance, and Legacy Funding Finance.
On Thursday, the House passed its first bill of the 2015 session. House File 6 conforms Minnesota’s tax code to some of the federal tax changes made since 2013 as it relates to items in the 2014 tax year. In total, this bill provides $19.9 million in immediate tax relief to Minnesota’s taxpayers. Included in the bill are deductions for higher education tuition, educator classroom expenses, and mortgage insurance premiums. I am very encouraged that the first bill we passed this year will keep more dollars in taxpayers’ pockets.
Do not hesitate to contact me to discuss legislation or events that are taking place in St. Paul. It would be an honor to speak with you to discuss your ideas for how we can make state government work better for you, your family, and your business.
Please keep an eye on your email inbox as I will continue to keep you up to date on bills and committee news as we move through session. My colleagues and I intend on working together with Minnesotans to make sure that Minnesota continues to be a wonderful place to work, live, and raise a family.
