St. Paul, MN—State Representative Jon Koznick, R-Lakeville, issued the following statement regarding media reports that Metro Transit is investigating an assault of a TV reporter that occurred this morning at a light rail station. Tuesday’s incident is the latest in a troubling trend of high-profile crimes committed on the light-rail system including an assault last week of an elderly woman.
“My thoughts are with the victim of this brutal assault and I pray that they make a speedy recovery. Today’s attack is a grim reminder that our transit system is in crisis as crime continues to grow and remains an issue, even during COVID orders.” said Rep. Koznick. “Transit riders should not fear being victimized when they use public transportation. That is why I will continue to be a strong advocate of strengthening safety and security at Metro Transit. It is time for the House and Senate to work together and take action towards ensuring a better transit rider experience for all Minnesotans.”
Koznick plans to offer an amendment during Thursday’s floor session to address transit safety and security. The amendment has bipartisan support and contains components of House File 3740 a bill he authored.
