Legislative Update (April 15, 2015)

Wednesday, April 15, 2015

Hello friends and neighbors,

We are continuing another busy week at the Capitol and will soon begin to hear omnibus bills on the floor. As we discuss these and other important issues, please provide your feedback by taking my Legislative Survey.

Last Monday, I introduced the Family Surplus bill for the House. The bill, which is authored in the Senate by Lakeville Senator Dave Thompson, cuts all income tax brackets by half of a percentage point. After years of overtaxing Minnesota families, this legislation reduces the growth of government and ensures that the government takes less of your family’s hard-earned income.

One of our top priorities this session has been ensuring quality care for our seniors and vulnerable adults. Like many of you, I’m concerned by news reports of missing senior citizens. I’ve co-authored HF1056, which provides training to local law enforcement agencies to develop lifesaver programs that locate lost or wandering persons who are mentally impaired. As we all age, missing adults has become more common, especially those who suffer from Alzheimer’s and similar issues which can cause confusion and wandering. Better training and awareness will ensure that steps are taken to safely return our loved ones to their families. Watch for our broader plan on Aging to be announced soon.

School Board member Laura Beem was my State of the State guest last Thursday. It was great to hear Laura’s thoughts on education. I’m committed to investing in our youth to ensure they have a top-notch education that prepares them for careers and life. Our Republican budget invests more than an additional $1 billion in E-12 education, spending $16.87 billion in 2016-2017. Thanks to Laura for joining me.

Speaking of education, I support the Student Physical Privacy Act, HF1546 (I mentioned it last week). To clarify, this bill deals with transgender student policies, ensuring that privacy and safety is protected for biological male and female students in public school restrooms and on sports teams. I appreciate all the feedback I have heard on this bill.

Please stay tuned for details on my May 7th town hall! I look forward to being in our community with Senator Thompson to hear your comments on the legislative session. Between now and then, please continue to take my
Legislative Survey and contact me to share your thoughts and concerns. You can reach me via phone at (651) 296-4375 or via email at rep.jon.koznick@house.mn.

Have a great week,

Rep. Jon Koznick
