ST. PAUL – Governor Mark Dayton delivered his State of the State address to a joint convention of the Minnesota Legislature this evening. Governor Dayton emphasized the strong performance of Minnesota’s economy and reiterated his desire to see the $1.9 billion budget surplus used to for strong investments in Minnesota’s schools, from universal pre-kindergarten programs to continuing the tuition freeze at state colleges and universities.
“I was encouraged by Governor Dayton’s strong emphasis on improving outcomes for our kids, and making the future of Minnesota better through stronger schools," said Rep. Dave Pinto (DFL - St. Paul). "We have a rare opportunity to act this year to make lasting improvements to both early learning and higher education, and we have to act on both. The Governor has called on us to act, and it would be a failure of leadership if we didn’t take this opportunity to improve the future of all Minnesotans by investing a significant portion of the surplus in our students.”
