Dear Neighbors:
The second week of the 2018 legislative session proved that Minnesotans are committed to doing something to prevent gun violence this year, and we can’t delay. I am so grateful to the thousands of Minnesotans who have been showing their support.
Working to Prevent Gun Violence
On Thursday, the House Public Safety Committee heard my bills on criminal background checks (HF 1669) and gun violence protective orders (GVPOs) (HF 1605). You can click here to watch the full hearing. I can’t express enough gratitude to the many Minnesotans who respectfully shared their views (on both sides), who stood with me at the Capitol, and who have sent notes of support since. Thank you.
Unfortunately, my Republican colleagues tabled the bills. But I remain determined and hopeful. As the Star Tribune noted, there appears to be real momentum to take action. Last week, President Trump expressed some support for background checks, and Sen. Marco Rubio announced that he supports GVPOs as well. We can do more to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people and at the same time uphold the rights of gun owners. We can't wait yet another year for action. The time is NOW. Let's keep pushing.
February Budget Forecast
On Wednesday, MMB released the February Economic Forecast, showing a modest surplus of $329 million. While Minnesota’s budget remains relatively stable, federal uncertainty threatens the economic outlook for our state and Minnesota families. It’s important to exercise caution, keeping an eye on our state’s long-term fiscal stability. Where we do invest, we should do so in ways that increase opportunity for all Minnesotans, not just corporations and the wealthy.
