Legislative Update - July 19, 2018

Thursday, July 19, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you are having a great summer so far! Summer in Minnesota is truly something special and I hope you are finding time to come together and enjoy everything our state has to offer. Whether it’s visiting a state park, spending a weekend at the cabin, picking berries, or biking to a local fishing pier, there are so many great reasons to spend time outside with our families and friends!

Explore Minnesota
As you plan summer travel, consider checking out Explore Minnesota for ideas. They have wonderful resources and great travel ideas in a region you may already be planning to visit, or ideas for a trip you’ve never even considered, without even leaving our great state.

Property Tax and Renters Credit
I want to remind everyone to apply for a property tax refund or renters credit before it’s too late. Many Minnesotans qualify for this refund but many also forget to file!

The deadline to file for a property tax refund is August 15th. Take a few minutes and apply for your refund online at the Department of Revenue’s Property Tax Refund website.
Our community has lots of neat Little Free Libraries!
New Laws
Several new laws went into effect on July 1st. They included licensing for athletic trainers, changes to the Taconite Economic Development Fund, adjustments to the legislative budget office, and personal claims against the state. You can read more about the new laws here.

Last Update Until November
This is my last update until after the election. Due to campaign finance laws, legislators cannot use state resources for unsolicited communications during an election period because it might create an unfair advantage. Despite hitting the pause button on my legislative updates, I am still available to meet, answer questions, and discuss issues important to our community. You are always welcome to contact me at 651-296-7153 or rep.jamie.becker-finn@house.mn. I look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you!
I’d also like to thank you for the opportunity to serve our community at the State Capitol. My top priority as your voice has been to ensure the things our community values are at the forefront here at the Capitol. By working together we can build a better future for all Minnesotans. That includes making health care accessible and affordable; guaranteeing our kids have a first-class education; making higher education and job training a reality for Minnesotans; and keeping our communities safe and healthy for everyone.

Community Events
There are many fun community events happening throughout our district in the coming weeks! I look forward to seeing you at the parades, community meals and other events!

July 27-29 enjoy the annual Slice of Shoreview which incorporates a wide variety of family-oriented activities including a carnival, parade, art and craft fair, food vendors, various displays and demonstrations, talent show, lots of entertainment and, of course fireworks. Located at Island Lake County Park at the intersection of Interstate 694 and Victoria Street in Shoreview.

Sincerely,

Jamie Becker-Finn
