ST. PAUL – Rep. Matt Bliss, R-Pennington, issued the following statement regarding news that Cass Lake-Bena Middle School is receiving $343,095 in school safety grant funding. Last session, the Legislature approved and Gov. Mark Dayton signed into law $25 million in capital investment funds that schools could apply for to make physical safety improvements. The Minnesota Department of Education formally announced the grant allocations in a news release.
“There is a great need for improving security at our schools and the Legislature was able to take a step forward this year by including funding for structural upgrades in the bonding bill,” Bliss said. “It is good to see a school in our region is receiving a portion of that funding and I look forward to continuing to make this a priority issue because our children deserve to feel safe at school.”
The Legislature approved an additional $25 million in school safety grants as part of the supplemental budget bill, but those funds were vetoed by Dayton.
