Dear Neighbor,
The Legislature returned to the Capitol to begin the 2023 legislative session this week and most of what happens the next five months will relate to the state’s $18 billion surplus.
I continue advocating to give these over-collected tax dollars back to Minnesotans in the form of meaningful, permanent tax relief – starting with eliminating the tax on Social Security. It seemed as if we had bipartisan support for that move last fall, but now some people are getting squishy and could fail to live up to their promises.
Furthermore, the one-time rebate checks Gov. Walz was so adamant about issuing before last November could be shrinking if they materialize at all.
An $18 billion surplus means around $6,000 apiece could go to Minnesota taxpayers in one way, shape or form. We need to be vigilant with these dollars and convert as much of the surplus as possible to permanent tax relief.
It is highly concerning to see how giddy some folks appear to be to spend this massive overcollection of taxpayer money on government programs. I urge them to walk the walk on tax relief they said they support last fall.
Watch for more news from St. Paul as this session unfolds. For now, here are some other links provided by the Minnesota House of Representatives I think you’ll find helpful in tracking the Legislature:
