THIS WEEK IN THE LEGISLATURE
BILL HEARING ON HIGH QUALITY AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS
Yesterday I presented HF907, a bipartisan proposal to increase young people’s access to high quality afterschool programs through Afterschool Community Learning Grants (ACLG), in the House Education Finance Division. We had a broad range of support from organizations that receive federal 21st Century Community grants to provide enrichment activities, and from students who participate in high quality after school programs.
The bill was laid over for possible inclusion in a future education appropriation bill.
RESTORE THE VOTE
On Wednesday the House Subcommittee on Elections approved HF40, sponsored by Rep. Raymond Dehn, to automatically restore voting rights for people who have served their sentences. There is a lot of momentum behind this proposal with a large coalition of Minnesotans showing up and Gov. Tim Walz, Minnesota’s First Lady Gwen Walz, and Secretary of State Steve Simon all in support. I’m proud to be a co-author of the bill.
The next stop for the bill is a hearing in my Government Operations Committee scheduled for Tuesday, February 19 at 9:45 a.m.

WAGE THEFT
Yesterday, HF6 received a new public hearing. Under the bill, employers would need to keep detailed records on the pay of their employees, or face stricter penalties. Many members of the community came out to testify, and ultimately it passed through and will continue onto its next committee.

COMMITTEE HEARINGS OUTSIDE OF THE CAPITOL
Minnesotans expect their legislators to be accessible and meet with them in their communities, which is why DFL legislators are holding a variety of official “field hearings” outside of the Capitol to allow more Minnesotans to participate in the law-making process and shape what their state government looks like.
Today, the Environment and Natural Resources Finance Division held a public hearing at the Dodge Nature Center in West St. Paul. Meeting minutes and other materials are available at house.mn/committees.
FIELD HEARING: TRANSPORTATION FINANCE & POLICY DIVISION
On Tuesday, February 26, state legislators will be visiting North High School in Minneapolis to hold an official field hearing. The hearing will be conducted by the Transportation Finance & Policy Division of the Minnesota House of Representatives. All members of the community are invited to attend, and the committee welcomes public testimony.
