Neighbors, The 2023 legislative session convenes on January 3, and we are busy preparing legislation to help all Minnesotans succeed. I am honored to be part of our committee leadership team with the announcement from Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman of my appointment as the next chair of the House Education Policy Committee. I am excited by my new assignment and look forward to the progress we can make moving forward. The full committee structure and list of chairs are available here. The pandemic was very difficult for our kids and educators, and we have an opportunity to help our students with their social, educational, and emotional progress in the classroom, and to provide resources for our teachers. We will deliberate how to use some of our historic projected $17.6 billion budget surplus to ensure our children have a first-class education and all Minnesotans thrive. New laws take effect January 1 On January 1, new laws will take effect, including some consumer protection items and a requirement for postnatal care. You can read more here. Heating Assistance Available This cold weather is a taste of what’s ahead and a reminder the state Energy Assistance Program can offer financial assistance with heat and electric bills, emergency fuel deliveries, and repair or replacement of broken heating systems. Grants are based on household size, income, and utility costs, and average $500. Learn more or fill out an application here. Also, the Cold Weather Rule is in effect which can prevent utility customers behind on their bills from having their electric or natural gas service shut off if they develop a payment plan with their service provider. Details about the protections under the rule are available here. HAPPY HOLIDAYS I wish you a wonderful holiday season with family, friends, and loved ones!
