Rep. West Legislative Update

Wednesday, January 18, 2023

Hello from St. Paul,

A pair of bills are scheduled for debate on the House floor tomorrow. The first is the most extreme pro-abortion proposal in the country; the second requires inflation to be included in the forecast.

The plan allows abortions all the way until birth. It also allows abortions in the 2nd and 3rd trimester to take place in unlicensed facilities, despite the obvious medical risks. I do not believe the average Minnesotan views this as common sense.

This bill has been heard in multiple committees. To date, the House majority has refused to accept any amendments that would provide guardrails for abortion. If successful, this legislation would be more extreme than abortion laws in every single European country.

I remain hopeful the majority party will be more reasonable with these amendments when they are offered on the House floor.

The second bill allows inflation to be included in every state budget forecast. This is a terrible way to govern. Basically, it puts government spending on autopilot, and it doesn’t matter if the spending is effective or not.

It is the legislature’s job to determine how much should be spent on the state’s budget, and it should be done with a vote, not just an assumption. Imagine if this was current law, state government spending would be skyrocketing with current record inflation.

I will be voting no on these bills.

Democrats have an incredibly narrow majority in the Minnesota House. 48% of Minnesotans did not vote for them to lead last November. Moving forward, it’s my hope they will work for all residents in our state, and not solely their partisan base.

Talk to you soon,

Nolan
