Dear Nitty Gritty Granite City Neighbors,
I hope everyone is staying warm. It certainly helps to keep moving, and I feel like I haven’t stopped since I was sworn in as your state representative. We have a lot of exciting things happening at the State Capitol that are going to improve our community and state, and I wanted to share some of those with you.
Committee Assignments
For the 2019-2020 legislation sessions I am honored to serve as Vice Chair of the House Corrections Division. The other committees I serve on are:
- Capital Investment Division
- Higher Education – Finance and Policy Division
- Transportation – Finance and Policy Division
I am excited to be on these committees because they put me in a strong positions to tackle the many challenges we face as a community. I look forward to working for you and with my fellow legislators in these committees. You can find out more on these and other committees here.
Stillwater Correctional Facility
After rescheduling due to the extreme cold, the House Corrections Division will hold our historical committee hearing this week in the Stillwater Correctional Facility. I had the opportunity to tour the facility last weekend and saw first-hand what measures are being taken to ensure that the staff and surrounding communities are safe, as well as those incarcerated. With the St. Cloud Correctional Facility in our district, improving safety at these facilities is something I take very seriously.
You’ll be able to watch our committee hearing live at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, February 6, at this link. I’ll also be sure to share a reminder on social media.
Paid Family and Medical Leave
All Minnesotans deserve the opportunity to thrive, but too many have to choose between work and taking care of a loved one. This is why on Wednesday, the first hearings were held for the Paid Family & Medical Leave Bill, a bill I am proud to co-author.
The hearings consisted of families who have struggled to make ends meet while caring for a loved one. These are our friends and neighbors, if not something that many of us ourselves have experienced. This bill would ensure up to 12 weeks of partial wage replacement for medical leave, including pregnancy, as well as 12 weeks for family leave to take care of a child or other family member. Passing this legislation is the smart thing to do, and it’s the right thing to do.
I want to hear from you!
I believe that work here at the Minnesota State Legislature is done best when voices are heard, and I always want to hear yours. You can call me at (651) 296-6612, or email me atrep.dan.wolgamott@house.mn. My office in St. Paul is Room 401 in the State Office Building. I look forward to hearing from you.
Stay Warm & Go Huskies!
