Legislative Update - January 10, 2020

Friday, January 10, 2020

Rep. Wolgamott

Dear Granite City Neighbors,

I hope you’re having a fantastic start to 2020! This year’s legislative session is only a month away, and there are a few things I wanted to update you on at the start of this new year.

Climate Change & Clean Energy Forum

Next week, I’ll be hosting a forum on the impacts of climate change, and the solutions that can be found in Minnesota’s clean energy future. I’ll be joined by House Energy and Climate Division Vice Chair, Rep. Jamie Long.

climate

Minnesota the fastest warming state in the nation, and with the devastating fires in Australia in the news, it shows that climate change is an issue that’s impacting our entire planet. It’s going to take some bold and innovative brainstorming to take on this issue, and I look forward to your questions and comments next week!

St. Cloud Freshman Tour

As a state legislator, I know that it’s incredibly important to get out of the committee room and into the community as much as possible. During the interim, the Democratic House has made an effort to ensure that my colleagues and I understand the issues facing all Minnesotans, not just those in our district. With the 2019 Mini Session, field hearings, and legislative tours across the state, we’ve listened to the varied policy needs of communities across Minnesota, and the next stop is the Nitty Gritty Granite City!

tour

Next weekend, I’ll be hosting the first-term members of the DFL House, as well as Speaker Hortman and Majority Leader Winkler, for a weekend tour of all that St. Cloud has to offer. We’ll visit a variety of sites across the city to give lawmakers a better understanding of how we can support communities like ours, and I’m incredibly excited to show off our town. Be sure to follow along on social media, including my Facebook page, to see all the stops we’ll be making next weekend.

Minnesota Presidential Primary

The 2020 Presidential Primary will be different from past years for Minnesota, with the main change being that the process will no longer be done at party caucuses. Minnesota’s Presidential Primary will take place on Tuesday, March 3, but early voting via absentee ballot starts next Friday, January 17.  This is only for the state’s presidential primary, as primaries for other offices like the U.S. Senate and legislative seats will be on August 11.

If you have any questions about Minnesota’s presidential primary, or voting in general, I encourage you to contact the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State at mnvotes.org or 1-877-600-VOTE to make sure your voice is heard.

Northstar Town Hall

Our last community event before the 2020 Legislative Session begins will be our Northstar Town Hall. I’ll be joined by Sen. Jerry Relph and representatives from the Minnesota Department of Transportation as we go over the future of Northstar, our goals for the upcoming session, and take your questions and comments.
