ST. PAUL – Today, State Rep. Dan Wolgamott (DFL–St. Cloud) joined Reps. Zack Stephenson (DFL – Coon Rapids), Kaela Berg (DFL–Burnsville), Jessica Hanson (DFL–Savage), and Dave Lislegard (DFL–Aurora) in announcing their proposal to enact a gas tax holiday this summer.
“We need to suspend the gas tax to help relieve the financial stresses of rising prices and inflation,” said Rep. Wolgamott. “This proposal will ease the pressure Minnesotans are feeling at the pump without jeopardizing funds for roads and bridges.”
These DFL lawmakers are proposing the state suspend the gas tax this year from Memorial Day to Labor Day to help relieve the pressure that working families are feeling. Minnesota’s gas tax is 28.5 cents per gallon, and the savings would be particularly significant to working Minnesotans.
The proposal would use General Fund dollars to offset the revenue that is typically raised by the gas tax. During the summer of 2021, figures provided by the Department of Revenue show that Minnesota’s gas tax raised just over $207 million. Minnesota is projected to have a $7.7 billion surplus.
