Legislative Update - Honor the will of the voters

Dear Granite City Neighbors,

On Friday, the Minnesota Supreme Court handed Republicans a major defeat by striking down their illegitimate power grab. The Court ruled that a quorum in the Minnesota House of Representatives requires 68 members, and effectively invalidates every action Republicans took since January 14, 2025.

This ruling has provided clarity to what has always been the case - Republicans must work with Democrats for the House to operate. We’ve been saving a spot for our GOP colleagues at the negotiating table, and I’m hopeful we can reach a compromise soon.

We are asking Republicans for something very simple: to honor the will of the voters. That means agreeing to not kick out Rep. Brad Tabke of Shakopee, and agreeing to govern under shared power if the House returns to a 67-67 tie.

Until Republicans commit to honoring the will of the voters, I will continue to focus on doing important work in my district, such as meeting with constituents and local officials, participating in tours, drafting bills, meeting virtually with legislative colleagues, committee staff, and the Governor’s administration, and honing in my Higher Education budget proposal spreadsheets.

Zoom Meetings

I want to thank all of our neighbors that met with me last week in St. Cloud, and share a few of my favorite meetings.

I sat down with Amy Trombley on the final day of her remarkable tenure with United Way. I couldn’t be more excited to see the amazing impact Amy will have on our community in her new role as VP for Community at the Initiative Foundation!

I met with SCTCC faculty who use Z-Degree open textbooks in their classrooms. The Z-Degree Open Textbook Program, which empowers faculty to create their own materials and allows students to save money on expensive textbooks, was the first bill of mine to be signed into law!

I was also joined by Rep. Nathan Coulter - who would be our DFL Co-Chair on the Higher Education Committee - for a tour of SCSU. I had a blast showing off our community to him and planning ways we can improve higher education outcomes and bolster our workforce in St. Cloud.

I have more meetings planned for this week, but I’m also ready to return to the State Capitol on a moment's notice if we are able to agree to a bipartisan power sharing agreement that honors the will of the voters.

If you have any questions, my cell is 320-828-2632.

Sincerely,
