ST. PAUL – Minnesota’s 2022 legislative session began Monday and Rep. Shane Mekeland, R-Clear Lake, said he hopes this goes down as the year the Legislature turned a historic $7.7 billion surplus into permanent tax relief for Minnesotans.
“We are staring at an opportunity to provide permanent tax relief for Minnesotans unlike anything this state has ever seen,” Mekeland said. “People are being slammed by inflation and our businesses have had the deck stacked against them the last couple of years, much of which is linked to restrictions the governor placed upon them. Our state has an overabundance of revenue and people are struggling. The timing couldn’t be better for providing meaningful, permanent tax relief to lessen their burden. I look forward to addressing this issue throughout the new session, along with other key subjects, such as strengthen public safety at a time violent crime has surged in our state.”
