Legislative update

Friday, January 6, 2023

Dear Neighbor,

The House returned to the Capitol this week to kick off the 2023 session, including a swearing-in ceremony that always comes with a deep sense of gratitude for the people of our district who entrusted me as their voice in St. Paul.

House committees have spent the first week getting up to speed, with me serving one related to energy and another on labor and industry. Watch for more on those panels as the session progresses, particularly in energy where I will continue advocating for affordable, reliable power.

There is no way around the fact we must make up for the black hole in energy that liberal policies are causing by bringing down production at Sherco but, so far, House Democrats haven’t brought forward viable solutions. Stay tuned.

We also have significant decisions to make regarding the state’s surplus of around $18 billion and rising. We need to get as many of those dollars as possible back in the hands of the people who were subjected to over-collection by the government.

Watch for more on these and other subjects as the session progresses. I’m sure I’ll have a lot to say. For now, a sincere thank you to the people of our district for the continued support and I welcome your input along the way. You can reach me at the Capitol by calling (651) 296-2451 or by emailing rep.shane.mekeland@house.mn.gov.

Have a good weekend and, as always, please let me know how I may help.

Sincerely,

Shane
