SAINT PAUL – Rep. Kristin Robbins (R-Maple Grove) issued the following statement on the February Budget and Economic Forecast released today showing a continued looming budget deficit:
“Today’s budget forecast shows that Minnesota is on the wrong path under one-party control. Democrats spent a $17.5 billion surplus in 2023 to grow government by 38 percent over two years. This out-of-control spending will result in deficits, despite Democrats raising taxes by $10 billion last year, even if we do not spend any additional money this year. Minnesota families and seniors cannot afford more tax hikes to pay off politicians’ reckless spending. I fill continue to fight for fiscal responsibility in St. Paul and protect Minnesotans’ hard-earned tax dollars.”
The February budget forecast showed a $3.7 billion surplus in 2025, but a $1.5 billion deficit beginning in 2026. The deficit is forecasted as if the surplus will not be spent, meaning any new spending bills passed in 2024 will further increase the deficit.
