Minnesota House Approves Equal Rights Amendment
I’m committed to ensuring all Minnesotans have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of gender. In fact, the Minnesota House DFL Majority is nearly gender balanced. As we recognize March 2019 as Women’s History Month, we are proud to celebrate our trailblazing female legislators and partner with female leaders throughout the state to build a Minnesota that works better for all of us.
The roots of National Women’s History Month go back to March 8, 1857, when women from various New York City factories staged a protest over working conditions. The first Women's Day Celebration in the United States was also in New York City in 1909, but Congress did not establish National Women's History Week until 1981 to be commemorated annually during the second week of March. In 1987, Congress expanded the week to a month. Every year since, Congress has passed a resolution for Women’s History Month, and the president has issued a proclamation.
Minnesota women deserve equal rights in all aspects of life. All Minnesotans should have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of gender. Yesterday, the House met and approved an Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) ballot question to let Minnesotans decide whether or not to give everyone full equality under our State Constitution. I’m a proud co-sponsor look forward to bring this historic legislation to the people of Minnesota to decide. After nears 100 years since women won the right to vote it is time that the voices of women and all Minnesotans be heard loud and clear. |
