St. Paul, Minn. – Tomorrow, Rep. Zack Stephenson (DFL-Coon Rapids), Commerce Commissioner Grace Arnold, and Office of Higher Education Commissioner Dennis Olson, will hold a press conference at St. Cloud Technical & Community College (SCTCC) to highlight the importance of student loan borrower protections and the benefits they provide to student borrowers. They will be joined by SCTCC President Annesa Cheek, Minnesota Student Association President Abdulaziz Mohamed, and SCTCC alum Aguirre Reese.
The Student Loan Borrower Bill of Rights, a new law passed in the 2021 legislative session, provides consumer protections to thousands of Minnesotans who are repaying student loans. It requires student loan servicers to be responsive and responsible in managing student loans and prohibits deception and other practices. Student loan servicers operating in Minnesota must be licensed by the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Commerce will regulate the student loan servicers in Minnesota in accordance with the law, including reviewing consumer complaints, conducting examinations for compliance, and conducting investigations.
