Thank you to all who came out for our virtual town hall Tuesday night! We had a productive conversation on the many issues facing our state and outlined our priorities for the remainder of the legislative session.
The legislature was in recess last week, and I hope you and your families had a very happy Passover, Easter, and Ramadan.
This week, I’m working with my colleagues to start passing finance bills.
Curtailing Catalytic Converter Theft
One of the top issues I have been addressing in the legislature is the rise of catalytic converter theft in our communities. We have now taken one step further in driver protection, as free marking kits are available at the Coon Rapids Police Department and the Anoka Police Department. Using these kits, You can now protect yourself from catalytic converter theft and help our local law enforcement catch thieves by marking your catalytic converter. This program was created as part of a bill I passed last year to try to stem the tide of catalytic converter theft.
You can pick up your free marking kit at the Coon Rapids Police Department or the Anoka Police Department. Make sure to bring your VIN number and license plate number with you so that you can register your kit. That way, if your catalytic converter is stolen and subsequently found in the trunk of a thief’s car or at a scrap yard, police will be able to track it back to you and hold the thief accountable for their actions.
More work needs to be done, but I will not stop fighting for real public safety solutions.
House Tax Plan
We are seeing signs of recovery in our state’s economy, but at a time when corporate profits are soaring and the State has a record surplus, many families are still living paycheck to paycheck and struggling with higher and higher prices. We at the Capitol have an obligation to provide economic opportunity for the hard-working Minnesota families who made this economic growth possible and use the surplus to help Minnesotans afford their lives. Here are some more details on our plans aimed to reduce costs of some of the largest expenses like child care, housing, health care, and student debt.
The House Tax Bill also cuts the tax on Social Security so that anyone making less than $75,000 would no longer pay any tax on their Social Security benefit. I have long supported eliminating this tax, and I view this as a positive step forward. The bill also contains the largest property tax cut in recent memory.
