Neighbors,
We know many of you are concerned about the Trump Administration threatening to deport thousands of long-time Hmong and Lao residents of the U.S. back to their country of birth. We share your concerns. This is our home, these are our neighbors and our friends, many of whom have lived in Minnesota for more than 40 years.
Right now we know that over 4,500 Lao and Hmong Americans have an order of removal, and that includes more than 450 Minnesotans. At the moment, anyone who does not have an order of removal does not need to be concerned. We are aware that there are a lot of fears and a lot of questions to be answered. Our office is working rigorously with our congressional offices and looking at ways we can support our communities from being forcibly deported. MAP Chair Samantha Vang, Sen. Foung Hawj, and Rep. Jay Xiong held a press conference concerning the deportation of Hmong / Lao residents back to Laos under the Trump administration.
On February 29, ReleaseMN8 will be hosting an informational immigration workshop for the Southeast Asian community. The event will cover a variety of immigration topics including an overview of those at risk for re-detention and deportation, a "know your rights" presentation, and how to request one’s own records. Attorneys from Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM), American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Mai Neng Moua Law Office will be present. The event will be at the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation from 10am to noon. Translation will be available in Hmong and Lao. More details are on Facebook here.
