I hope your week is off to a great start. We’ve reached our ninth week at the Capitol. Below is news from St. Paul:
Gun Violence Prevention Legislation Advances
Last week, the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Division approved gun violence prevention legislation:
House File 8, authored by Rep. Dave Pinto of St. Paul, expands criminal background checks to all gun sales and transfers -- helping to close loopholes exploited by dangerous individuals, such as domestic abusers.
House File 9, also known as the “red flag law,” is authored by Rep. Ruth Richardson of Mendota Heights. It gives law enforcement officials the ability to remove firearms with due process from an individual’s possession for a temporary period of time if a judge determines they are dangerous.
Our community of Plymouth has expressed a strong desire to be safe at school, at work, in movie theaters, at concerts, in places of worship, and at other public spaces. I have also heard from several community members concerned about a parent’s dementia or family member’s depression and how they can protect their loved ones from accidental gun violence, or even suicide at this stage of their lives.
Addressing MNLARS
Another issue I’ve heard about from many constituents is ongoing difficulties receiving license plates, tabs, and titles in a timely manner. The Minnesota Licensing and Registration System (MNLARS), has had some significant problems and last Thursday, the House passed legislation addressing them. The bill includes funding for IT development, customer service, and reimbursements for deputy registrars who have had to bear the brunt of many of these ongoing issues. Minnesotans deserve basic functions, like license tab renewal, to work efficiently. I’m committed to finding solutions and ensuring our community members are receiving the service they need and deserve, so was glad the legislation passed with bipartisan support. Governor Walz signed the bill into law this morning.
Women’s History Month
I’m committed to ensuring all Minnesotans have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of gender. Interestingly, the Minnesota House DFL Majority is nearly gender balanced. As we recognize March 2019 as Women’s History Month, we are proud to celebrate our trailblazing female legislators and partner with female leaders throughout the state to build a Minnesota that works better for all of us.
