Plymouth Arts Fair, Anti-Vaping Efforts, & Plymouth Creek Center Expansion Update

Dear Neighbors,

It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner! As many prepare for holiday shopping, I hope you’ll join me in participating in Small Business Saturday, which is on the calendar in the middle of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Our small businesses are vital to growing Plymouth’s local economy, attracting new talent, and fostering commerce and community relationships. I am proud of our innovative and hardworking small business owners, which is why I co-sponsored successful legislation last session that invests in Minnesota startups through tax credit allocation to angel investors.

Get a jump start on your shopping at Plymouth’s Annual Arts Fair this weekend! Approximately 30 local and regional artists will have their work on display and available for sale. Products vary from jewelry to household items, clothing and accessories, pottery, sculptures and more. The fair is free, kid-friendly, and open to the public.

Public Works Stop in Plymouth

The House Capital Investment Committee concluded its statewide tour last week, visiting several sites across the state with proposed public infrastructure improvements. Throughout the statewide regional tour, committee members learned about local communities’ infrastructure needs firsthand. Visits included colleges and universities, public safety facilities, wastewater treatment and flood mitigation systems, community centers and others, including the Plymouth Creek Center.

Our community is growing and so are the needs of our students and seniors. An upgraded expansion would create many more amazing opportunities for Plymouth and Minnesota! The 20-year-old regional asset has approximately 300,000 annual visitors statewide. I’ll continue to advocate for state funds in the 2020 session.

Combating Youth Vaping

In 2017, the number of young Minnesotans using tobacco rose for the first time in 17 years due to a surge in e-cigarette use. Since then, the crisis has only gotten worse. Vaping-related injuries are being reported in Minnesota and across the nation, but many young people remain unaware of the health risks associated with e-cigarettes. When it comes to protecting our kids from tobacco products, Minnesota has long been a leader. We can’t wait for watered-down action from the federal government – we can act now.

In late October, my House colleagues and I announced a package of tobacco prevention proposals including increasing the legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21, clearing the market of flavored tobacco products, closing tobacco tax loopholes, ending online tobacco sales, and dedicating funding to preventing youth addiction.

I was proud to support Tobacco 21 in Plymouth, and will continue to advocate for statewide Tobacco 21 and other bold measures to prevent tobacco addiction.
