Legislative Update-Minnesota's Response to COVID-19

Thursday, March 5, 2020

Rep. Klevorn

Dear Neighbors,

I am hearing from many community members who want to know more about what their state government is doing to address the spread of COVID-19, a viral respiratory illness often referred to as the Coronavirus. First, I want to assure you that Minnesota is well prepared to effectively respond to an outbreak. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is in constant contact with the Legislature, hospitals, clinics, and providers.

Click here to visit an MDH webpage with specifics about what’s happening. On March 4, the House Health and Human Services Division held a public hearing about Minnesota’s preparedness and legislation to appropriate the necessary financial resources. Watch a video replay of the entire meeting here

MDH’s labs are prepared to test patients for the condition. There are basic precautions we can all take to prevent the spread of COVID-19. First thing’s first: wash your hands thoroughly. It may seem like common sense but washing your hands for at least 20 seconds is critical to effectively remove microbiological bacteria. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and be sure to cover your cough with your sleeve or elbow. Lastly, if you’re sick: stay home.

I will share updates and news from MDH about this very serious issue as I receive them.

Minnesota House Approves Gun Violence Prevention Bills

On Feb. 27, I voted in support of legislation to require criminal background checks on all gun sales and establish extreme risk protection orders. Minnesotans deserve to be safe at work, school, their place of worship, or any other public space. We are long overdue in getting this done and I hope the Senate will join us to help save more lives.

Legislation in Committee

As we have painfully heard the stories of nearly a thousand Argosy students who were devastated when the university closed its doors halfway through its spring semester in 2018, we realized the fix that we put into place last year is not enough. To help prevent this from happening again, I’ve authored legislation that allows the Minnesota Office of Higher Education to revoke or suspend approval of a degree-granting school if the school uses fraudulent, dishonest practices, or financial irresponsibility. The bill had a public hearing in the Higher Education Committee and has advanced forward.

Today I was honored to present another bill of mine that would establish August 15th each year to be designated as India Day. This day would be for all of us to celebrate our Indian neighbors' heritage, culture and contributions to Minnesota. A big thank you for your testimony and advocacy, Shanti Shah!
