Legislative Update – January 16, 2025

Dear Neighbors,

First off, I want to thank everyone who came to our SD45 Town Hall last weekend. Senator Ann Johnson Stewart and I appreciated the opportunity to give our perspectives on the 2025 legislative session, and it was great to hear your questions, comments, and concerns coming into the new year.

Working for Our District

This Tuesday, the Minnesota House was set to meet to open the legislative session. Unfortunately, House Republicans are choosing to attempt an illegitimate power grab, and throw out an election they lost. They are now holding sham sessions and taking unlawful unconstitutional actions.

This power grab is unprecedented, and it will do lasting harm to our institution, the rule of law, and democracy. More importantly, House Republicans are attempting to silence half the state, who voted for DFL Representatives, including our district. If they succeed, they have pledged to roll back policies that you, I, and our neighbors support.

That’s why I’m standing with my colleagues and Minnesotans around the state to protect the will of the voters, deny the Republicans’ illegitimate power grab, and get back to building a future in Minnesota that works better for everyone.

I’m already working in our district and for our district. I’m taking meetings to focus on the issues of you, my constituents: like my meeting yesterday with a parent whose daughters rely on disability waivers for care. Or meeting with the City of Minnetonka to discuss housing solutions that support renters and homeowners. Or meeting with the mayors of Deephaven and Wayzata to hear about their communities' priorities and how we can partner to achieve them.

This type of work is most important to me, and I’m looking forward to continuing meetings with local officials, community organizations, and constituents in the coming days.

I hope Republicans abandon their illegitimate power grab, come back to the negotiating table, and respect the reality of a tied House, but until they do, I will be focused on the work ahead for our district. If you don’t already, I’d encourage you to follow my official Facebook page where I will be posting more frequently during these unprecedented times.
