A big thank you to all the families who joined us for Kids Day at the Capitol! The kids learned the process of how a bill becomes a law, played Speaker of the House, and we debated some good policy and bill ideas for next session.
New Laws Take Effect Tomorrow
Several new laws will go into effect tomorrow. One of these will add e-cigarette smoking (vaping) to the Minnesota Clean Indoor Act Air, which will prohibit vaping in public indoor spaces. Minnesotans deserve to breathe clean air and I’m glad we took measures to address the public health concerns around the harmful substances e-cigarettes emit. You can learn more here.
Also set to go into effect tomorrow is the new ‘hands-free’ while driving law. Minnesota motorists will be required to put the phone down and focus on the road after connecting to a Bluetooth device, using a dash clip, or turning on “do not disturb” mode while driving, using one-touch activation. First time offenses will result in a $50 ticket, and subsequent tickets are $275 plus court fees. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has complied a comprehensive list of helpful tips and Q&As for what’s allowed under the new law. As always, feel free to contact my office with questions at rep.heather.edelson@house.mn.
National Night Out
National Night Out and Night to Unite is less than a week away. It’s a great opportunity to connect with familiar faces in the neighborhood and meet new neighbors. You can register and find more information online from the City of Edina here.
