Your Friday Update from the Office of Representative Brad Tabke:
This Thursday, Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) released the 2019 November Budget and Economic Forecast, showing a predicted budget balance of $1.3 billion heading into our 2020 legislative session. While Minnesota’s economy is doing well, other factors show that cautious, prudent investments will be needed in order to secure a strong future for Minnesota.
With projected inflation itself being over $1 billion, Minnesota will see a deficit in future fiscal years. Throw in uncertain trade policies at the federal level, a shortage of workers, and forecasted economic slowdown, it becomes clear that smart, responsible legislation will be needed in order to make sure we’re building the Minnesota we all deserve.
The budget balance from MMB is also just a current snapshot of what we can expect as we prepare to return to the Legislature in February, when there will also be another economic forecast released. You can brush up on the specifics of the budget forecast at MMB’s website, or read MPR’s coverage of the forecast here.
