Keep an eye out for the #WhoCaresForUs stories being shared by legislators, advocates, and organizations on social media. You can also follow along as legislators continue to push for legislation that establishes rent and mortgage assistance, increases wages for personal care assistants, protects essential school workers, increases broadband internet access, funds the Minnesota Family Investment Program, ratifies state workers’ contracts, and produces more small business loans. Many of these have already passed through committees in the Minnesota House, with more action expected next week.
Getting Local Retailers Back to Work
Yesterday, we covered the recent announcement made by Governor Walz that extends the “Stay at Home” order to May 18, and also allows retail stores and other non-critical businesses to begin curbside pick-up and delivery starting Monday. This is a slow move towards a sense of normalcy, but the hope is that some business will be able to continue operations in a way that doesn’t risk the progress we’ve made so far with slowing the spread of COVID-19.
A preparedness plan and template for retailers to follow can be found here, and additional updates from the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry are available here. The Minnesota Retailers Association is also offering best practices and critical next steps for all of our local shops currently struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic.
