Week in Review

Friday, May 8, 2020

It was a very busy week as we edge closer to the end of the session. Here are some of the top developments from the week that you may have missed.

Minnesota Department of Management and Budget Releases Budget Forecast

Governor Walz, alongside Minnesota Department of Management and Budget Commissioner Myron Frans, announced that Minnesota is forecasted to have a budget deficit of $2.4 billion. A deficit was expected due to the economic slowdown caused by the spread of COVID-19. While a deficit certainly isn’t ideal, thanks to several years of sound fiscal management Minnesota is well prepared to manage this deficit. With $2.3 billion in Minnesota's “rainy day” fund and over $2 billion in assistance from the federal government we are in a solid financial position.

Canterbury Park HOrse Racing Bill Moves Through House Committees

HF 4597 which is authored by Rep. Tabke, passed the House Commerce Committee  and the House State Government Operations Committee this week. This bill would allow off-site wagering on horse races. With stadiums and arenas expected to be closed for the foreseeable future, this is one simple yet effective way for us to support our local economy.

House Passed COVID Economic Security Act

The House passed HF 1507, a critical bill that will provide economic support for small businesses, fund broadband and telemedicine expansions, $100 million in housing assistance, and increase pay for personal care assistants. This legislation will provide our smallest businesses with the relief they need to persevere. Far too many of the previous bail out dollars went to large corporations, whereas these funds are designed to specifically aid the small mom and pop stores that form the backbone of our communities. We have to take bold action in standing up for the most vulnerable if we are to make it through this crisis without causing harm to our state. By sticking to our shared values and helping each other wherever it is needed we can weather this storm.

House Economic Agenda

Rep. Tabke signs onto bill to help craft breweries and distilleries during COVID-19 crisis

The bill creates economic opportunity by temporarily relaxing rigid restrictions on off-sale beverages, allowing for limited to-go sales from taprooms and cocktail rooms. The bill allows craft breweries with taprooms to sell up to a six-pack of 12oz containers or a four-pack of 16oz containers per customer, in addition to growlers and other vessels already permitted. It’s important that we find every way possible to get our economy going without endangering Minnesotans. You can read the full bill here.
