Dear Neighbors,
The snow isn’t slowing us down at the Capitol! An exciting new proposal to combat climate change was the highlight of the week here in St. Paul. Please check out the details below.
Minnesota’s Renewable Energy
As Minnesotans, we are lucky to live in such a beautiful state, with so many parks and bodies of water to enjoy. We are proud to live somewhere that experiences all four seasons, even if that means spending a little extra time shoveling in winter months. But, our weather is becoming more extreme, and we are starting to experience irreversible damage to our state’s climate. We must make changes now if we want to preserve the Minnesota we have known and loved for generations. This is why HF 700 is essential. The bill had a public hearing on Tuesday, and it is starting to move through committees. Legislators, advocates and supporters gathered for a press conference in advance of the hearing. I am proud to have signed on as a co-author.
If passed, it would increase the proportion of energy that must come from renewable, clean sources and set target dates for when these goals need to be achieved by power companies. Minnesota is endowed with many renewable resources, and investing in them would create jobs and slow down climate change. Check out my exclusive interview with the Chief Author of the bill, Rep. Jamie Long here.

Filing for Taxes
I’ve received some questions about the tax filing process for last year’s returns. There is some confusion because of the federal tax changes that passed in late 2017. While the Legislature didn’t address the issue of tax conformity last year, the Minnesota Department of Revenue has updated its forms to reflect current Minnesota law, so you should feel comfortable filing your taxes at any point. Of course in the near future, there will be a discussion at the Legislature about state conformity aligning to the federal changes. As this takes place, I’ll be working to ensure all Minnesotans are treated fairly under any changes.
