The research and public health data indicate that the virus is spread most in places where people gather for long periods of time, especially when masks are not consistently worn. For example, a quick, essential errand at a retail store with a mask and social distancing appears to be lower risk than a gathering of friends for dinner where guests are likely to be seated closer together and unmasked while eating or drinking—whether it’s at a restaurant or in their own home.
We all have a role to play in slowing the spread and protecting each other- our healthcare workers, first responders, and frontline workers especially. On Monday this week, I joined colleagues in a bipartisan coalition to pledge to practice public health guidelines: staying home when we can; wearing a mask; washing our hands frequently; distancing socially; getting tested; and being kind to one another.
COVIDAware MN
Yesterday, Governor Walz shared news of a new tool to help keep Minnesotans informed as cases surge across the state. COVIDaware MN is a free mobile app that can alert people if someone they’ve been in close contact with – even someone they don’t know – contracts the virus. The app is free, voluntary, and anonymous. You can download it and learn more here.
Additional Economic Relief is on the Way
To say 2020 has been difficult for Minnesotans is an understatement. This morning, Governor Walz announced a COVID-19 economic relief package to keep businesses afloat, support workers, and help families keep food on the table. DFL and GOP legislative leaders also announced slight differences in their packages, which you can review here.
I look forward to working with the governor and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to deliver this much-needed relief.
While state and local governments, including Dakota County, are doing what they can to help businesses and families make ends meet, it’s clear we need federal assistance as soon as possible. Last week, my House colleagues and I sent a letter urging President Trump and Senate Majority Leader McConnell to quickly approve a new COVID-19 relief bill because our businesses, workers, and families shouldn’t have to wait any longer for the support they need to get through this pandemic.
Shop Small Saturday
Our small businesses need our support now more than ever. If you’re planning on getting a jump start to your holiday shopping this weekend, please consider purchasing your gifts locally. Help is on the way, but until then, let’s show our small shop owners our communities have their backs.
