It’s been a busy week. Here’s what we’re working on at the Capitol:

Health and Human Services

As COVID-19 adds new fears for Minnesotans already experiencing health care difficulties, support for new solutions – including expanded affordable health insurance options – has increased across party lines. In response, the Minnesota House has outlined new legislation that would allow Minnesotans to enroll in the Minnesota Care public option to take advantage of lower out-of-pocket costs and access to a strong network of providers. We know that our families, economy, and local communities are stronger when we all have access to truly affordable, high-quality health care, and I look forward to our continued work to achieve this goal for all Minnesotans.

Elections Legislation

Last week, my House colleagues introduced a legislative package called the Democracy for the People Act, which aims to build a strong, inclusive democracy that works for Minnesotans of every race, region, political party, and generation. Highlights of the package include: ensuring our state and local elections officials can access the critical federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) funds they need for election security and infrastructure; establishing ballot drop box and return sites; and closing dark money loopholes to increase transparency, and see who is influencing our elections. I look forward to this proposal moving through the committee process.

Gov. Walz Announces COVID-19 Recovery Budget

Governor Walz released his budget proposal for the next two years yesterday. The proposed COVID-19 Recovery Budget focuses on supporting working families, ensuring students catch up on learning, and helping small businesses stay afloat while driving Minnesota’s economic recovery. While I’m still reviewing all of the components of the recovery budget, I’m particularly interested in the investments that fund forgivable loans for our struggling small businesses and deliver critical support to our students and schools. I look forward to working with the Senate and Governor Walz on a bold and fair budget plan that puts us on the fast track to recovery.
