Legislative Update- March 22, 2021

Monday, March 22, 2021

Rep. Bierman

Dear Neighbors,

I hope this email finds you well and enjoying the official start to Spring.

On Thursday last week, the governor announced Minnesota has administered more than two million COVID-19 vaccine doses. This is a result of increased vaccination rates as supply has increased from the federal government, and an expansion of capacity in the state’s vaccine distribution network. Minnesota is a national leader in getting vaccines into arms and continues to rank in the top ten among states for the percentage of doses received that have been administered. Summer Learning Package Introduced

It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted learning across the state. While students, educators, and families have shown great resiliency, student achievement has been deeply impacted over the past year. It’s critical to invest in our students to ensure they can have the opportunity to catch up from learning loss if they’ve fallen behind.

My House colleagues and I have developed a Summer Learning Package that invests in students from cradle to career. The bill addresses learning loss by expanding access to tutoring, investing in field trips and hands-on learning, and implementing summer programs for preschoolers, high schoolers, and adults who want to sharpen their skills. The measure also funds student mental health support and delivers funding for school districts that have experienced declining enrollment.

Protecting Minnesotans from Price Gouging

Today, my colleagues and I will vote on a bill to help protect Minnesotans from exorbitant pricing of essential goods and services during a local or national emergency. A state of emergency- when people’s fears and vulnerabilities are most exposed- is not the time for profiteering. While most Minnesota businesses would not engage in these predatory practices, those that would, ought to be held accountable. I support this measure and look forward to its advancement.
