SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Today, the House Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Committee discussed a proposal authored by Rep. John Huot (DFL – Rosemount), a member of the committee, creating new incentive bonuses up to $10,000 to help recruit new peace officers. Newly licensed peace officers will be eligible for bonuses under Rep. Huot’s bill once they reach their one-year anniversary on the job and if they’re in good standing.
“I’ve been partnering with our mayors, police chiefs, and prosecutors to address the recent rise in crime in the South Metro and a common response from these leaders is the need for more peace officers,” Rep. Huot said. “Our residents and families expect and deserve safe communities. This new legislation gives us an opportunity to enhance public safety through incentivizing recruitment, helping us fill gaps and retain more officers in law enforcement, a win-win for our communities.”
The bill was laid over for possible inclusion in a future Public Safety finance bill. Video of the hearing will be available on House Public Information Services’ YouTube channel. Documents and other information from the hearing are available on the committee webpage.
