Release: Rep. Huot cheers ISD 196’s nomination of Teacher of the Year

Monday, January 30, 2023

Saint Paul, Minn. –  Alissa Standon, a middle school communications teacher at Rosemount Middle School in Independent School District 196, has been nominated to become Minnesota’s 59th Teacher of the Year. Statewide, 131 educators are also eligible. Representative John Huot (DFL-Rosemount) previously served on the House Education Finance committee, and cheered Ms. Standon’s nomination.

“Minnesota is a leader in education, and it’s no secret that folks choose to live in our community for our top notch schools,” said Rep. Huot (DFL-Rosemount). “Congratulations to Ms. Standon for her commitment and perseverance in providing quality education to our middle schoolers in ISD 196- especially during all the challenges of a global pandemic.”

The program celebrates the tradition of excellence in teaching in Minnesota. Eligible candidates include pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade, Early Childhood Family Education and Adult Basic Education teachers.

An independent panel of leaders in the fields of education, business, government, nonprofit and philanthropy will read candidates’ portfolios over the next few weeks and narrow the list to a group of semifinalists. In March, the panel will convene again and review additional materials from the semifinalists to choose a group of finalists. The Minnesota Teacher of the Year banquet is set for May 7th at the Saint Paul RiverCentre.
