I hope you're having a wonderful summer - I can't believe how fast it's going! Here’s a quick update on what I’ve been working on at the Capitol and in our community.
I had a great time to catching up with neighbors and law enforcement during National Night Out!
Addressing Gun Violence
Last week, I joined legislators and Minnesotans impacted by gun violence to demand that Senate Republicans hold hearings and take a vote on common-sense measures that have passed with bipartisan support in Red and Blue states. It is inexcusable that Senate Republicans won't hear basic measures such as Red Flag Laws and universal background checks.
Insulin For All
House DFL members are holding community conversations on insulin across the state because the voices of Minnesotans directly impacted by skyrocketing health care costs are going to be critical in promoting comprehensive solutions. All Minnesotans impacted by or concerned about the price of insulin are invited to come! Join us for the first one tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in room 120 of the Capitol.
Restore The Vote
I joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers and activists yesterday for a roundtable focused on restoring the right to vote and participate in our democracy for those who have served their sentences and want to engage with their community.
Minnesota's felon disenfranchisement policy disproportionately impacts communities of color. In 2012, only 1.2% of disenfranchised White Minnesotans were unable to vote under current law, whereas, 7.4% of African Americans and 5.9% of American Indians were unable to vote. Allowing those who’ve repaid their debt to society tells Minnesotans that their voice, and their future matters.
Safety in our community
I've been in communication with the Department of Transportation about the pedestrian bridge in our community connecting the West Bank and Seward neighborhoods, which was recently hit, causing it to temporarily close. I've asked the Department to complete a safety assessment and focus on replacement - I also authored a bill during the 2019 session to replace the bridge, and will continue to advocate for funding so that our community can have safe, reliable transportation options.
Pathways to Prosperity
Pathways to Prosperity is leading a career training program in September - it's open to the public and will be going on from September 7-September 14 from 5:00-6:00pm each day at Merrick Community Services.
