Legislative Update - Paid Family Leave and COVID-19

Tuesday, March 10, 2020

Rep. Noor

Neighbors,

Public health officials in Minnesota are working around the clock to prepare for and stop the spread of COVID-19.

For weeks now, MDH has been pulling together local public health, hospitals and health care providers for regular conference calls to share information and updates, and coordinate preparations. They’ve held calls with school nurses and superintendents, and will continue to do so in the days ahead.

The Legislature has put together and unanimously passed a funding solution that is expected to be signed by the Governor today.

What can Minnesotans do?

The best available guidance for avoiding coronavirus is to take the same precautions you take for avoiding colds and flu:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with your sleeve or a tissue, not your hand
  • Stay home when sick.
  • Stay informed. Check the MDH and CDC websites often.

Minnesota is fortunate to have a strong public health sector and world-class health care providers working hard to keep us healthy. We should all do our part and follow their guidance to prevent our neighbors from getting the illness.

Paid Family Leave

Last week the Minnesota House passed a timely measure to allow everyone in Minnesota to have access to paid family and medical leave. If signed into law, the Paid Family & Medical Leave Act would provide Minnesotans with up to 12 weeks of leave to recover from illness, bond with a new baby, or care for a loved one. They would receive a percentage of their regular wages while on leave. All Minnesota working parents and caregivers deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing they can be there for their families without risking their jobs. I was proud to vote "Yes" for paid family and and medical leave!

Addressing Education Disparities

Last week we held an all-day education deep-dive focused on addressing racial inequities in Minnesota schools. We’re collaborating with and learning from experts and people who are most impacted -- because we believe that every child deserves a world-class education. Combating Hate Crimes

Last week I joined my colleagues in announcing legislation to expand and improve reporting of hate crimes in Minnesota. The bill (House File 3837) requires updated training for peace officers on crimes motivated by bias, and directs the Minnesota Department of Human Rights to consult with the Board of Peace Officer Standards on proposed improvements. Watch a video replay of the announcement here

Over the course of six months last year, Minnesota Attorney General Ellison held seven town hall meetings across the state focused on hate crimes with a broad coalition of elected officials, religious and community leaders, and impacted community members. The legislation is a result of these conversations.

High School Pages get to spend the week up close with the legislative process. I was glad I got to meet a constituent who served as a page last week!

I hope you're adjusting to Daylight Saving Time! In case you haven't heard, some House members are considering legislation to change DST to all year round - what do you think? Have a great week!

Sincerely,
