STATEMENT: Rep. Noor recognizes one-year anniversary of fatal Cedar High Apt. Fire

Wednesday, November 25, 2020

MINNEAPOLIS – Today, Representative Mohamud Noor (DFL- District 60B) issued the following statement recognizing the one-year anniversary of the Cedar High Apartment Fire. On November 27, 2019. The 14th floor apartment resulted in five deaths and multiple injuries.

“One year ago, there was a devastating fire in our district at the Cedar High Apartments. Five people lost their lives and many were injured. The victims’ friends, family and entire community still mourn their untimely passing. Our community lost so much during the fire and we continue to reel from it a year later.

“But, in the face of such devastation, what stood out to me was the heroism of our brave firefighters and first responders, who put their lives on the line to save lives and to contain the fire. Our community and neighbors came together to offer support, shelter, and sometimes a shoulder to cry on.

“In the year since, it has been my priority to ensure health and safety for all high-rise buildings. The recently released report by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Fire Marshal Division (SFMD) highlights that need: ‘It is the SFMD’s position that all high-rise buildings should be protected with fire sprinkler systems. Had this building been protected with fire sprinklers, it is the opinion of the SFMD that no loss of life would have occurred.’”

Rep. Noor plans to re-introduce legislation to require automatic sprinkler systems in all existing high-rise buildings in the upcoming session.
